This is the fourth part of a year-long series. Read the previous update here.

Happy New Year, Nashville.

2019 was a phenomenal year for Nashville Public Library (NPL) and the Read to Rise program. As we closed out the year, more than 1,000 children were registered, having logged more than 4,500 days when they read at least 20 minutes during the day.

If that’s not a great way to welcome 2020, we don’t know what is.

Catching up with our lil’ readers, we were pleased to find they had spent plenty of time reading during the holidays.

Ray

Number of Reading Days Logged: 151

Last Book Read: Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems

“A friend recommended this book to us, and it's so much fun to read out loud, like Mo Willems’s other fantastic books,” said Yurina, Ray’s mother. “This story is about a toddler who's just learning how to express herself through words. Ray's in a similar phase, and we're looking forward to that magical moment when the baby babbles turn into real words and sentences!”

Favorite Thing from Reading this Month: “We've moved on to more plot-based picture books, and Ray has learned to say, ‘Uh oh!’ or ‘Oh no!’ in response to things that happen in the story,” Yurina said. “We're working on getting him to say ‘Yay!’ and other positive remarks at the end, though by the end of the book, he's already busy reaching for the next book for us to read.”

Last Book Read: The Neighbors by Einat Tsarfati

“We laughed at the silly, whimsical illustrations and the surprise at the very end!” said Virginia, Poppy and Goldie’s mother.

Favorite Thing from Reading this Month: “A favorite book this month was Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend! by Cori Doerrfeld. This book cemented Doerrfeld as a favorite author in our house,” Virginia said.  “ ‘Miss Dolly’ sent us a copy of The Rabbit Listened, and we read it regularly! It teaches optimism, adaptability, and processing sadness and loss in a gentle, simple way.”

No matter what your other New Year’s resolutions may be, reading to your kids should always be a priority.

And guess what? At NPL, your reading time nets you great prizes, for free.

So, what are you waiting for? Register for Read to Rise and help your children grow their love of reading.
