The story of Tom Walker is a variation on the legend of Doctor Faust, a 16th century magician and astrologer, well known to have sold his soul to the devil for wisdom, money, and power.

Washington Irving has here reinvented the tale, setting it in a 1720s New England full of Quakers and Puritans, hypocrites and shysters, speculators and loan sharks, many on a brimstone path to destruction.
