After getting his sister devoured by a dragon and losing all their supplies in a failed dungeon raid, Laios and his party are determined to save his sister before she gets digested. Completely broke and having to resort to eating monsters as food, they meet a dwarf who introduces them to the world of dungeon meshi, delicious cuisines made from ingredients such as the flesh of giant bats, walking mushrooms, and screaming mandrakes.
The anime dropped last year, and it was the most recommended show from everyone I knew. Whether they watched anime regularly or only dropped into the scene every couple of years, everyone swore up and down this was a crowd pleaser.
Is it worth all the hype? YES.
The story is deeper than you would have imagined for a premise that seems to be all about eating monsters while trying to retrieve a party member. The tone shifts are masterfully done. The vibe will go from light-hearted humor to serious world building darkness and can do both tones with emotional satisfaction.
My favorite thing about this anime is how much love and exploration of Dungeons and Dragons tropes are imbued throughout the story. So even DnD fans are getting love here.
