Anime Unleashed Recommends...

Anime fans are eating well. There are so many great anime series, manga series and movies to peruse that finding a good place to start usually depends on who you can talk to about it.

One of the best feelings for any fan is to recommend something you think others might love.

This feeling is only beaten by being the receiver of a solid recommendation.

If you find yourself enjoying, or have enjoyed anything listed here, feel free to message me so we can chat about why you love (or loathe) what's on the list.

I welcome all anime/manga recommendations!

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects, and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god.

I'm constantly told by a friend that Death Note has the perfect first episode. It wastes no time introducing you to the main characters and conceit of the show. The world isn't too different from our own, and it has a moral question that, depending on where you are in life, may change as you change.

From Makoto Shinkai, the director of the global smash hit Your Name, comes a critically acclaimed romantic drama set in the rain soaked streets of modern Tokyo. English voice cast includes Alison Brie, Lee Pace and Riz Ahmed.

If you loved Your Name and want to be emotionally devastated again by Makoto Shinkai, then you should really set a night aside for Weathering With You. Makoto's previous works Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days really set him up nicely to put a new generation through a heart-wrenching roller coaster story with an animation style and color palette worthy of his scope.

After getting his sister devoured by a dragon and losing all their supplies in a failed dungeon raid, Laios and his party are determined to save his sister before she gets digested. Completely broke and having to resort to eating monsters as food, they meet a dwarf who introduces them to the world of dungeon meshi, delicious cuisines made from ingredients such as the flesh of giant bats, walking mushrooms, and screaming mandrakes.

The anime dropped last year, and it was the most recommended show from everyone I knew. Whether they watched anime regularly or only dropped into the scene every couple of years, everyone swore up and down this was a crowd pleaser.

Is it worth all the hype? YES.

The story is deeper than you would have imagined for a premise that seems to be all about eating monsters while trying to retrieve a party member. The tone shifts are masterfully done. The vibe will go from light-hearted humor to serious world building darkness and can do both tones with emotional satisfaction.

My favorite thing about this anime is how much love and exploration of Dungeons and Dragons tropes are imbued throughout the story. So even DnD fans are getting love here.

While we don't have access to the anime series, we have the complete manga series available to read with no wait through our Comic Plus collection.

If you love anime and manga, we've got you covered with different series available through Hoopla, Kanopy, Comics Plus and of course physical media in our locations.

There's an anime program (Anime Unleashed) at the Main location every third Tuesday on the third floor, where we check out programming from our collection and what's currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
