Film Festivals

White Noise is one of the prestige films of the season, opening both the Venice Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Based on a 1985 National Book Award-winning novel by Don DeLillo, it’s directed by Noah Baumbach and stars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig.  

Three films are premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival: The Wonder, based on the book by Emma Donoghue and starring Florence Pugh; All Quiet on the Western Front, based on the 1929 anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque; and Women Talking, based on the book by Miriam Toews and starring Frances McDormand.

Hollywood

Another highly anticipated opening is Blonde, based on the fictional take on the life of Marilyn Monroe by Joyce Carol Oates and starring Ana de Armas. It comes out on September 23.  

Then for fans of investigative journalism in the vein of Spotlight, there’s She Said, based on the nonfiction book by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct. The film comes out November 18 and will be about how they broke the story, with the leads played by Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan.

Holiday Crowd-pleasers

A Man Called Otto is based on A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, with Tom Hanks as Otto/Ove. It releases December 14. There's already a Swedish film version.  

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is stop-motion animation; voices include Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. 

Upcoming

The miniseries Daisy Jones and the Six doesn’t have a date set yet, but fingers are crossed that it will be released late this year on Amazon Prime. Based on the wildly popular book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, it’s inspired by Fleetwood Mac, with Riley Keogh starring as Daisy. It was produced by Reese Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine.
 

The Pale Blue Eye, based on a historical fiction novel by Louis Bayard featuring a young Edgar Allan Poe, may be moved to 2023. The cast includes Christian Bale, Gillian Anderson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Robert Duvall, and Toby Jones.

Two other adaptations you may have been waiting for have definitely been postponed to 2023: 

• Ripley, a Showtime series based on the Patricia Highsmith character and played by Andrew Scott (you may know him as the "hot priest" from Fleabag); also featuring Dakota Fanning as Marge

• Killers of the Flower Moon, based on the nonfiction book by David Grann.  It exposes the horrific murders of members of the Osage tribe in the 1920s after oil was discovered on their land, and the subsequent FBI investigation led by a young J. Edgar Hoover. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, and Robert De Niro. The cast also includes Americana musicians Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.

And 'Salem’s Lot, based on the 1975 Stephen King vampire novel, has been taken off the 2023 movie release schedule entirely.  New release date TBD.
