I am so tired of the world right now. Between the massive pandemic, political upheaval, and other events that keep happening (March tornado, Christmas bomb), I’m exhausted and stressed out. So when I’m looking for entertainment, I just want something to enjoy. And if I happen to learn something as well, more power to me. 

Which I think is why I found these TV shows so enjoyable. Who doesn’t love to watch cute animals and the vets who keep them well?

I checked this one out on a whim, and I was hooked from the beginning. This one starts with an eagle who somehow manages to get stuck with a tree branch through his wing. Skewer, as he is christened (cool right?), has to be rescued by a local vet and the fire department. We also get to see musk ox, arctic foxes, bison, otters, and penguins. The goal is always to keep these animals in as natural an environment as possible, and hopefully be able to release them back into the wild. Plus, the Alaskan scenery is gorgeous. Maybe someday when we can travel again I’ll be able to see it for myself.

This show picks up where the Alaska Animal Rescue leaves off. Dr. Oakley works out of Haines, Alaska, and she treats animals at various pop up clinics in the area. She works with bison, musk ox, and other large Alaskan animals, but she also deals with more domestic pets like cats, dogs, and horses. I think that Dr. Oakley reminds me of Meredith Grey (from Grey’s Anatomy), so if that’s your jam, check this one out as well.

After really enjoying the other two, I came across this one and figured why not. Heartland Docs follows husband and wife veterinary team, Drs. Ben and Erin Schroeder, as they run their clinic in Cedar County, Nebraska. They also treat a wide range of animals from bison, cattle, and horses to goats, chickens, and even a Jesus lizard. I am amazed at all the different anatomies they have to know as well as how excited they are to handle so much poop. I’ve known for a long time that I was not supposed to be a doctor (ok, but I’m not touching it…). I guess this just adds vet to that list as well. 

I will admit that these vets did lose a few animals and I may have shed a few tears. But it’s part of life, and anyone who has ever had a pet has had to deal with this aspect of it. These shows are great, they are family friendly, and if you are just looking for something to veg out with, I highly recommend them. 

But be warned, they might break your cute meter.
