18 to Life on Skid Row with Sebastian Bach

May 24, 2018

What better way to kick off our musical Summer Challenge that with Sebastian Bach?

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m a bit of Gilmore Girls fan. I haven’t? Oh. Ok.
Ok, that’s done.
While I love Lorelai and Rory, there are some secondary characters who are just as awesome. Take, for instance, Gil, the guitar player in Lane’s band. If he looks, and sounds, familiar that’s because it’s Sebastian Bach. I’m a child of the 80’s, so I tots knew that he was the former lead singer for Skid Row. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of his back then, because hair bands – ugh – am I right?, I knew their hits “18 and Life” and “I Remember You” but that was it. Also, anyone would have to admit that Bach is what we like to call man-pretty.
So when his book came across my desk, I was intrigued. Even better, we have the audio version and it’s read by Bach himself. He’s a hilarious reader – he makes jokes, tells stories, and takes “smoke” breaks that I’m sure are not in the print version. Plus that voice. It’s so distinctive.
Like any good rock and roll memoir, there are a lot of shocking stories. The one that stayed with me was the time they duct-taped a groupie backstage after the show. Thanks Sebastian for sticking that in my brain. I knew those guys like to party, but I had no idea the amount of foreign substances that Bach ingested over the course of his life (so far).
It’s interesting to follow the progression of his career – from frontman to Broadway star in Jekyll and Hyde, to Gilmore (again I say woot!), to Jesus Christ Superstar. Yes. The bad boy of rock and roll ended up playing Jesus on Broadway.  Not bad for a kid who started out singing in the church choir.
If you can’t tell already, I’m a fan of Sebastian Bach and I highly recommend his memoir if you’re looking for something to kick off your Summer Reader Challenge with a bang. Our theme this summer is music – so how perfect would this book be? Check out our website for all the details on how to sign up.
Alright, my friends – rock on!
Happy listening to Sebastian go crazy…

PS The best fun fact that I learned from this book is that the one and only Geddy Lee (singer/bass player from Rush) is in an episode of Gilmore. And he’s there. I totally saw him. Season 7, Episode 16 – in the last scene of Lane’s baby shower, he’s tucked in the back on the left. It was worth listening to the book just for that!
