Mental Health Awareness

September 6, 2017

1 in 5 adults in the United States will experience a serious mental health issue in their lifetime. Though stigma and shame can prevent us from seeking help, NPL and the local mental health service community are here to provide information, validation, and hope.

There are many wonderful online and community resources to learn more about mental health and where to get help.

  • This brief, anonymous screening tool can help you determine if you or a loved one should connect with a mental health professional.
  • The National Alliance on Mental Illess has excellent fact sheets for accurate information on specific issues.
  • Psychology Today has a comprehensive directory to search and read about therapists, counselors, and psychologists in your area.
  • If you are in crisis and need to talk to someone, never hesitate to call the 24 hour crisis line (855) 274-7471 or text HOME to 741741.

During the months of September and October, six of our branches are spreading mental health awareness with displays featuring books, pamphlets, local resources, crisis lines, and a massage raffle. Check out the info while you are visiting a branch, or place a hold on one of the titles below that are featured by mental health topic.
