Book Clubs for Kids are FUN-damental

July 12, 2016

As Stephen King once said, “Books are uniquely portable magic.” Every time you crack open a book, you enter a new world filled with adventure and possibility. Imagine the sense of wonder a child feels each time they discover a new book they just cannot get enough of!

Now mix that sense of wonder and uniquely portable magic together into a library program, and you get a book club for children. Book Clubs are "fun"-damental for helping children develop a love of reading.

For years, book clubs have been popular among adults. You gather a group of friends, read an interesting new book, and then discuss it. Nowadays, kids want to get in on the action too, and the literature being published for them is out of this world good!

Summer is the perfect time to pick up a book and do a book club with your family. Read the book aloud at the dinner table and then discuss what happened. When you do this, you are developing listening skills, communication skills, comprehension skills, and so much more in your children. Book clubs help kids make the connection that reading is fun and enjoyable!

Libraries host book clubs for kids too.

During the school year, the Southeast Branch Library has a book club for kids called Book Surfers. It is for ages 8 and up and meets once a month to discuss that month’s pre-selected book. With a library card, your child can check out the selected book, read it at home, and then return to the library at the end of the month to make new friends, play games, talk about the book they read, and win prizes, like MORE books to take home and keep.  Sometimes authors even Skype with the group, allowing kids to ask questions and learn more about what it takes to be a writer.

The Southeast Branch Library will be hosting their kids book club this fall on the last Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

Here are the titles the Book Surfers will be reading each month:
September 28: A Whole New Ballgame by Phil Bildner
October 26: A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd
November 30: El Deafo by Cece Bell

Contact the branch for more information about the selected books or stop by the desk to check out the book!
