Several cool things have come to my attention, so I wanted to pass them along.

Deadline: November 5, 2012

East Side Story invites you to submit your book-themed art and challenges you to go beyond traditional book structures and the printed word in order to tell your story. Sculpture, 4-D, audio and any other media (including the printed word) are at your disposal. There are no entry fees* for this juried exhibit. Please limit your entries to three per person. Entries must be submitted digitally by November 5th, 2012. Please submit entries with the following information in the title tag [your name, title of work, dimensions] to paperartsnashville@gmail.com

Annie Herlocker, MLS and MFA Book Arts from University of Alabama. Owner of Paper Revival Press.
Jennifer Knowles-McQuistion, Owner of Brown Dog Bindery.

Jennifer and Annie are local educators and advocators of Book Arts, Paper Arts and Independent Publishing. They co-founded Handmade & Bound, Nashville and are members of the Nashville Book Arts Group, the PlateTone Printshop, and the College Book Arts Association.

*East Side Story retains a 40% commission on all works sold during the exhibition.

Workshop this weekend:

Memory & Place: Accordion Book & Creative Writing Workshop
November 3rd, 2012
1:00 pm- 3:00 pm

Learn the accordion book structure in this 2 hour workshop with author Susannah Felts and book artist Jennifer Knowles-McQuistion. Participants will come away with a 6-page accordion hardcover book filled with a personal story and images that arise from a creative writing session dealing with memory and place. This workshop will be hosted outdoors in the beautiful five points area of East Nashville at Nashville’s newest bookstore East Side Story. (weather contingency plan in place) Add to the spirit of the day by bringing a bottle of your favorite wine or a hot cup o’ joe!

No book arts experience necessary (Adults). Cost: $20 and $5 materials fee.

The Goldsmith Press & Rare Type Collection is a unique letterpress facility that includes thousands of hand-carved wood letters and antique printing presses. Established as an interdisciplinary print studio on the campus of Austin Peay, the Goldsmith Press encourages the university community and the citizens of Clarksville to write, print, and make public their individual stories.

Cool stuff from the August 11 book arts group meeting

We had a great meeting on Saturday, looking at Limited Editions Club and Arion Press books. I also heard about a couple of books/book arts videos that I wanted to share with you.

This one is about the local production of a book about Chet Atkins, including rare footage at the end:

Dolph Smith at Shakerag in 2013 – registration is open!

Book artist Dolph Smith, recipient of the Tennessee Governor’s Arts Award in the Distinguished Artist Award category, will be offering a class during the June 9-15 session of Shakerag in 2013. The workshop is titled, “Window, Window on the Book” and more information will be posted to the Shakerag website soon. Images of some of his work can be found on the Abecedarian Gallery website.

Join zine fans from Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, Little Hamilton Collective, and the NPL, as well as the zine curious, from 11am-4pm in the Teen Center to make a zine! We’ll have snacks, art supplies, and lots of conversation about zines.

All ages welcome.
