GROW: Road to Reading

The mission of GROW (Growing Right Onto Wellness) is to bring the community together with research scientists to create and test innovative programs aimed to improve the lives of children and their families.

Interested in Participating?

The study has two groups: the “GROW Healthier” group and the “GROW Smarter” group. You will be randomly put in to one of the two groups.

“GROW Smarter” workshops, offered through Nashville Public Library’s Bringing Books to Life!, teach skills to improve your child’s school readiness and success. Families in this group will receive a newsletter through email or regular mail every 3 months for 3 years. This equals a total of 12 newsletter sessions over 3-years. You will learn parenting skills to help create a learning environment for you and your child.

This program will include important topics that may improve school success as your child enters elementary school. We will also inform you of monthly events that will encourage these skills at your local public library or near-by public facility. You will also be invited to 1-2 sessions at your local library to learn more about how to use this resource to support your child’s school readiness and success.

The “GROW Healthier” group will teach skills to help improve your child’s nutrition, physical activity, and school success. These skills may also help improve your health too. This program is meant to bring you and your child together with other families in your community. This study has a health coach who will teach you healthy lifestyle skills. The study will last for 3 years. The first part of the study will meet weekly for 90 minutes over 12-weeks with 6-10 other families from your neighborhood. In the second part of the study a health coach will call you twice a month for 9-months. The last part of the study will include monthly GROW community-based events near you. An example of such an event would be a live cooking class with a Chef. Every 3 months for 3 years, there will be a school success newsletter sent through email or regular mail by the library staff. Also, we will invite you to a private GROW-specific Facebook group page. This page will help us share information with you about healthy lifestyle choices. For example, healthy recipes, reminders about sessions, and GROW-specific events.
